tdTomato, a Variant of mCherry

tdTomato is a dimer formed by the tandem expression of two mCherry monomers. This design aims to reduce protein aggregation, enhance fluorescence intensity, and minimize toxicity to cells or experimental animals. Therefore, tdTomato is more commonly used in in vivo experiments, as it provides a more stable and intense red fluorescent label.
